Vinatex (Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group), an affiliate of Vietnam’s largest apparel manufacturer and exporter, will be relocated due to pollution. The Dong Xuan Textile Factory located in a residential area in Hanoi that employs a large number of people and fetches good business results, will be relocated from its current location.
People living in the factory’s vicinity at Minh Khai and Vinh Tuy wards in Hai Ba Trung district have been complaining about the pollution caused by the factory.
Vietnam Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai took cognizance of the issue following a report on the issue in a newspaper. He later persuaded management agencies for relocation.
Daily discharge of smoke causes inconvenience to local residents. However, local authorities did not take action on the issue despite people’s concern on the same.
“We should not exchange the environment for economic value so we are in favour of relocation of the company,” Hai was quoted as saying in a newspaper.
At least 117 facilities in 12 districts in the city have been identified for relocation on urgent basis by 2020. Only 32 facilities have compiled plans to move.
Factories have been asked to strictly conform to operation regulations, including those related to the environment.
As per regulations, land vacated by polluting facilities in inner-city areas is utilized for social utilities.
