The apparel imports of the USA are rebounding on a rapid pace and, to the delight of the apparel industry, the import values are nearing to the values of pre-COVID period.
During Jan.-May ’21 period, USA imported US $ 29.22 billion worth of garments, marking 22.19 per cent Y-o-Y surge and shrinking its decline to just 11.75 per cent as compared to Jan.-May ’19 period when it imported US $ 33.11 billion worth of apparels.
Particularly in May ’21, the imports valued US $ 6.14 billion and fell short of US $ 511.93 million as compared to the same month in pre-COVID year 2019, while it grew by a massive 132 per cent as against the corresponding month of 2020 when import just reduced to US $ 2.65 billion due to widespread COVID-19.
In terms of volumes, USA upped its apparel import to 11,042.35 million SME in the first 5-month period of 2021, noting 35.30 per cent increase from the same period of 2020.
What’s worth noticing here is that reduced gap in 2021 as compared to 2019 on volume front as well. During Jan.-May ’19, USA’s volume-wise apparel import stood at 11,116.83 million SME, just 74.48 million SME up as compared to the latest figures!
M-o-M growth is too impressive…
According to OTEXA data that is analysed by Apparel Resources, the USA has witnessed 8.28 per cent monthly increase in May this year as compared to April when the country had imported just US $ 5.67 billion worth of apparels.
In terms of volumes, USA saw boosting import figures with 2,280.22 million SME of apparels coming to the country in May, while the figure was just 2,066 million SME of garments in April ’21, which means USA grew by over 10.30 per cent on M-o-M basis.
