Revival in consumer markets, as pandemic gloom ends, has led Canadian apparel buyers record 13.88 per cent growth in their imports during January ’22.
As per official data, Canada imported US $ 746.89 million worth of garments (both knitted and woven) in the first month of 2022, as compared to US $ 655.86 million worth of apparel imports in the corresponding period of 2021.
However, there is a decline of 5.88 per cent in import values as compared with December ’21 figures when Canada’s import valued US $ 793.61 million.
China declined both on Y-o-Y basis and M-o-M basis, while India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka were only three countries in top 10 tally that remained positive both on yearly and monthly basis.
Canadian imports from China shrunk to US $ 212.97 million in January ’22 and dropped by 4.11 per cent over Jan. ’21, while the decline over Dec. ’21 was 9.94 per cent.
India stood tall with 58.34 per cent and 34.62 per cent Y-o-Y and M-o-M growth, respectively, as it shipped US $ 280.95 million worth of garments to Canada during January ’22.
Bangladesh noted yearly growth of 36 per cent in January ’22 to ship US $ 1.17 billion worth of garments to Canada, while it remained dismal in its monthly performance as its shipment fell by 5.06 per cent over December ’21.
Vietnam that shipped US $ 1.05 billion worth of apparels too tumbled by 1.90 per cent over December ’21, while the growth over January ’21 was 25 per cent.
