Most garment manufacturing units associated with the manufacturers’ bodies – the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) – have paid salary and bonus to their workers, claimed industry bodies.
According to media reports, which cited Chairman of the PR Standing Committee of the BGMEA, Khan Monirul Alam Shuvo and Vice-President of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem, 96 per cent BGMEA member factories have paid workers’ festival bonus and 94 per cent have paid salary for July till Thursday, while around 850 factories associated with BKMEA have disbursed both bonus and salary, Mohammad Hatem reportedly underlined.
This is field-level update as of 3:00pm yesterday, reportedly stated Khan Monirul Alam Shuvo speaking to media while underlining the latest available status of wage and bonus payment by BGMEA member units.
Meanwhile, as per the Industrial Police of the country, as of Thursday – the last working day before the three-day Eid holiday starting Friday – 53 per cent industrial units, including apparel factories, did not pay wages for July while 22 per cent or 1,706 factories did not pay festival allowance until Thursday.
Excluding Dhaka metropolitan area, around 7,602 units are under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Police in the six zones of Ashulia, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Khulna.
Out of this, workers of 4,027 industrial unit including 1,824 RMG and textile units were yet to receive wages of July until Thursday.
