Japanese footwear giant Asics has entered a collaboration with the automotive component supplier of Toyoda Gosei, to create the ‘Skyhand OG sneakers’ from their leather offcuts. These innovative sneakers feature leather remnants from steering wheel manufacturing, showcasing a commitment to sustainability.
This strategic partnership marks their second tie-up with Toyoda Gosei for sustainable initiatives. Prior to this in 2023, the footwear company successfully launched a range of sneakers which was made from the leftover airbag fabric. This step demonstrates both the companies’ continued effort to minimize waste and utilize unconventional materials.
The newly launched Skyhand OG sneakers are produced in Vietnam, utilising leather scraps from Toyoda Gosei’s local plant, further reducing environmental impact by minimising transportation.
Toyoda Gosei, known for its ethical brand Re-S, actively repurposes waste materials. In addition to the sneakers, Re-S transforms airbag fabric and steering wheel leather scraps into a variety of products, including bags and pen cases, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental waste.
