The first half of 2021 has seen yearly growth in the US apparel import data as stated by the latest OTEXA data – both in values and volumes…
On one hand, the import values are still lower than the pre-COVID level – H1 ’19, whereas volumes, on the other hand, are almost similar to what USA sourced in H1 ’19 period.
The largest apparel importer in the world imported US $ 35.38 billion worth of apparels in H1 ’21, up 26.92 per cent from H1 ’20.
The values were down by 11.63 per cent on 2-year comparison, as the import had valued US $ 40.04 billion in H1 ’19, whereas volume-wise import stood at 13,365.48 million SME in H1 ’21, noting 38.39 per cent Y-o-Y surge and declining marginally by just 0.23 per cent as compared to H1 ’19.
The 2-year comparison and the negligible shrink in the volume-wise imports indicate the US buyers are still sourcing garment products from world over in bulk quantities. On the other hand, the decline in values says the unit prices are getting tighter – particularly for basic commodities, which will increase competition more in the coming months! As far as June ’21 is concerned, USA imported US $ 6.16 billion worth of garments, up 55.50 per cent on Y-o-Y basis – highest after Mar ’21 when it sourced US $ 6.49 billion worth of apparel products.
In volume-terms, US buyers imported 2,323.33 million SME of garments, growing 55.20 per cent yearly surge.
