Youngone, a global apparel manufacturer from South Korea, has recently gone coal-free in its Vietnam based units pushing ahead a successful step towards the company’s reduced emissions target of 2030. The global apparel manufacturer has eliminated coal and transitioned into biomass boilers fuelled by rice husk pellets at its Nam Dinh textile and dyeing facility.
Aiming to cut down 40 per cent of its emissions by 2030, Youngone has been consistently making development towards attaining eco conscious ways for their units.
This involved the overhaul of steam and thermal hot oil units made after extensive feasibility studies and planning. The first biomass boiler was installed in the third quarter of 2023, with subsequent installations completing the transition.
Youngone’s switch to rice husk pellets, sourced from local rice mills, not only reduces its carbon footprint but also supports the regional agricultural economy. The resulting boiler ash will be processed into organic fertilizer, further minimising waste and creating a valuable byproduct.
Youngone Group’s Vice Chairman, Rae Eun Sung, has emphasised that this effort exhibits the company’s commitment to sustainability and the benefit of the local community.
The company invested over US $ 2.7 million in biomass technology and waste recycling for this initiative. Youngone, an OEM for major sportswear and outdoor brands, operates manufacturing facilities in numerous countries and employs over 90,000 people worldwide. This transition to cleaner energy in Vietnam underscores the company’s broader sustainability strategy.
