The pace at which its rival manufacturing hub Bangladesh is making its factories Green, Vietnam needs to urgently make its garment and textile production sustainable in order to stay competitive.
Markedly, Bangladesh has 67 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified units and over 220 have applied for the green certification, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claims.
While speaking at a seminar in HCM City last week, Vu Duc Giang, Chairman, Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) said that the garment and textile industry is currently facing the constraint of production price, environment safety and health of workers, that’s why there’s a strong need to address the issues quickly.
It is important to note here that the textile and garment sector of Vietnam annually spends about US $ 3 billion on production energy.
According to a State Administration Representative, the textile and garment establishments in Vietnam need to upgrade their processes of production so that they match the world standards for emissions and wastage.
To ensure sustainable production, US Agency for International Development (USAID) has joined hands with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) in Vietnam with the intent of enhancing the energy-saving extent of garment and textile factories.
USAID will also help the firms get loans to undertake energy-saving projects.
The alliance will go official in Vietnam in the month of June this year.
